SMM (social media marketing)
Definition
SMM is the planned, regular running of a business’s social media to win customers: posts, short videos and replies. Agencies often charge USD 500–5,000 a month for a basic program (Sprout Social, 2026, mostly US rates), plus any ad budget.
Example
A coffee shop posts three short videos a week about new drinks and the team behind the counter, answers every comment within the day and once a month counts how many people asked about a table in direct messages.
Common mistakes
- Posting without a plan and stopping after two weeks.
- Counting followers instead of messages and visits.
- Confusing SMM with paid ads: ads buy reach for an offer, SMM builds the account people come to check.
- Confusing SMM with “SMM panels” that sell followers, likes and views: bought followers do not become customers, and Instagram and TikTok rules forbid fake engagement.
