UI/UX design
Definition
UI (user interface) is what people see and tap: screens, buttons, text and colours. UX (user experience) is how easily they reach their goal through it.
Example
UI change: the “Book” button gets bigger and a contrasting colour. UX change: the booking form is cut from eight fields to three and the button says “Book for Friday”. Both are design work, but only the second removes the reason people abandon the booking.
Common mistakes
- Treating design as decoration rather than as a way to make tasks easy.
- Copying a big brand’s interface without its users or its content.
- Never testing the design with real people before development.
- Skipping basic accessibility: WCAG 2.2 (level AA) asks for a contrast of at least 4.5:1 for normal-size text and tap targets of at least 24×24 CSS pixels.
