Glossary
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)
Definition
GEO is work on a website, its content and its mentions elsewhere so that AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity understand a business correctly and can name it in their answers.
Example
Someone asks an assistant to “recommend a dental clinic in my area”. The clinics it names are the ones whose services, prices and location it found stated clearly and consistently across trusted sources.
Common mistakes
- Treating GEO as a replacement for SEO: assistants often rely on the same pages a search engine indexes.
- Expecting a paid placement: an organic AI answer cannot be bought.
- Publishing different facts — prices, addresses, names — on different sites, so the model cannot tell which one is right.
