Core Web Vitals
Definition
Core Web Vitals are Google’s three metrics of real user experience on a page: how fast the main content appears (LCP), how quickly the page reacts to input (INP) and how much the layout shifts while loading (CLS).
Example
A home page with a huge hero video takes four seconds to show its headline on a phone; compressing the video and showing a still image first brings the main content up much sooner.
Common mistakes
- Testing only on a fast office computer: most visitors come from phones on mobile networks.
- Chasing a perfect 100 score instead of fixing what users actually feel.
- Confusing a one-off lab test with field data collected from real visitors.
